As my family was so influential in the UK film
industry (See
here) - I think it only fitting that I should nominate my top 30 best films
of all time.
To date I cannot think of 30... but I'll work on it. Also it
seems that all the titles are very short - which may suggest to some of you that
the films aren't all that good - but longer titled films have been forgotten by
me. Complete rubbish - the cards fall where they may...
I think what distinguishes these films from others I really
liked is that if Janet said lets put a DVD/VCD on and watch a film, these would
certainly get my attention whilst others I've either seen too many times or just
fall short of attracting.
| Film Title |
Description |
| Cluedo or Clue Clue |
One of those "farce" type films where everybody
is collected in a big old house and one by one they start getting murdered. In
this one - the butler takes control and keeps revising the way things could have
happened - so you end up unsure who is good/bad/dead/alive - crazy. |
| Sleuth |
Michael Caine and Sir Laurence Olivier spoofing it up in a sort
of black comedy - http://www.citizencaine.org/films/sleuth.shtml |
| Alien |
The original with Sigourney Weaver - dark, forbidding, shocking -
I can remember seeing this in Uxbridge with Les Bentley & Regina Bentley - and
we had no idea what it was about... what a shock!! |
| Arthur |
Dudley Moore (poor old Dud!!) and Liza Minelli, Sir John Gielgud - has
everything, comedy, music, sadness - great fun. |
| Robin Hood |
The one with Kevin Costner - again has lots of mood changes and
does the Sheriff of Nottingham steal the picture?? |
| Blade Runner |
Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer - brilliantly moody with glimpses
of what the future may look like (not nice) - the scene where Rutger Hauer
dies.... wonderful!! |
| Charade
& Roman Holiday | Audrey Hepburn and
Carry Grant - both enjoyable in different ways - the continual name/motive
mixing in the former and the impossibility of romance for a princess and
journalist in the latter. |
|
Ghostbusters | Enjoyable for the music
and the ridiculous antics |
|
2001 | Not all of it... the very first
scene - earthrise with Pax-Zarathustra (or however its spelt) - some of the
ape/desert scenes, of course the spinning space-station and shuttle, Pan-Am
stewardesses in zero-g, the mission to ?where? and Hal, forget the blinding
colours for 10 minutes as the ship arrives at ?wherever? - and it was all done
so long ago. I can remember seeing this with the Bassy's and thinking "what a
load of rubbish" as we came out - but over the years.... |
| Forrest Gump |
Laughing, crying - what a great ride...well done Tom Hanks |
| Meet Joe Black |
Lovely and slow, so sad towards the end, wow when
Brad Pitt 1 gets hit by the car.. what a shock, great performances all around. |
| Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels |
So many twists and turns - and aren't the
villains good? |
| The Full Monty |
Just so unexpected with many unknown faces - what
a laugh. |
| Four Weddings and a
Funeral | When a picture starts with the
first three words "F*ck, f*ck, f*ck" - you have to take notice - again lots to
laugh and cry about. |
| Ghost |
Patrick ?Swasey?, Demi Moore & Whoopie Goldberg..
what a weepie!! |
| Gladiator |
Just everybody and everything...really captured
moods, feeling, times.... I think.... |
|
You've got mail | Tom
Hanks again, in an uphill struggle to woo the lady, good ending! |
| Monsieur Hulot's Holiday |
Jacques Tatti, black & white, ages old, mime only
- no talking - when I saw it first back in the early 1960's I didn't know what I
was about to see, but ended up thinking it was just about the funniest film I'd
ever seen. |
| On Golden Pond |
Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn (just heard
she's died - 96) - very quiet. beautiful photography, lots of squirming personal
relationships. |
